Our Environmental Goals

The goal when we started this journey was to offset decades of greenhouse gas emissions produced by the Harvey family. From the beginning of the industrial age to the modern era, our carbon footprint could be offset by just one full operational year.

Carbon Footprint

100 kW

100 kW is the size of the largest generator in operation.  Each year this generator supplies enough green energy for almost 70 homes and offsets 600 metric tons of carbon dioxide that would have been produced by fossil fuels.

60 kW

An additional 60 kW will be generated with our smaller turbine and generator offsetting 360 metric tons of carbon dioxide and enough green energy to supply 40 more homes.

Sustainable Building

In addition to striving for carbon offset, the restoration has reused or repurposed existing building materials with steel beams from an abandoned local factory, floors from a closing lumber yard, and small items like electrical supplies from secondhand markets such as Habitat for Humanity ReStore. Even our large driveshaft components such as couplings and bearings are mostly sourced from "old stock"  industrial applications.  To truly strive for sustainability we reduce our waste stream in as many ways as possible such as recycling scrap metal and reprocessing old transformer oil into hydraulic fluid for heavy equipment.

When possible we strive to source our materials locally. Retaining wall concrete blocks are made from end of day excess concrete from a supplier in Harrisonburg. Nearly all the metal on site came from a defunct factory 20 minutes away. The large steel plates used to make the new floodgates were from Winchester. We are constantly looking for ways to both support the local economy while promoting sustainable material sourcing.
